Owa adalah kera yang hidup di lebatnya hutan-hutan tropis, salah satunya hutan di Indonesia. Berbeda dengan monyet, kera tidak memiliki ekor dan cenderung memiliki tubuh yang lebih besar. Selain owa, jenis kera lain di Indonesia adalah orangutan.

Tidak seperti orangutan, owa cenderung menghabiskan seluruh waktunya di pepohonan atau arboreal. Bentuk badan mereka yang langsing memudahkan mereka untuk bergerak di pohon.

Dengan tubuh yang lebih kecil dibandingkan orangutan, owa bergerak dengan lincah dan cepat di dalam hutan. Mereka dikenal dengan gerakan mengayun dari satu pohon ke pohon lain atau disebut dengan istilah brakiasi. Menariknya, owa dapat mengayun dengan kecepatan hingga 56 km/jam. Wow, cepat juga ya!

Selain untuk berpindah tempat, brakiasi membuat owa dapat mengambil buah-buahan yang berada di cabang pohon tinggi. Tentu ini keuntungan bagi owa untuk dapatkan makanan favorit mereka dengan mudah. Kemampuan ini juga berguna saat mereka berlari dari predator pemangsa mereka!

Kemampuan owa melakukan brakiasi di pepohonan dibantu oleh lengan mereka yang panjang. Kamu tahu ga? Panjang lengan owa hampir 1.5 kali lebih panjang dari kaki mereka loh! Makanya ketika mereka berjalan, mereka akan mengangkat tangan mereka agar bisa berjalan dengan seimbang.

Selain lengan yang panjang, owa memiliki sendi pergelangan tangan yang dapat bergerak lentur ke berbagai arah. Lenturnya pergelangan tangan mereka memungkinkan mereka berakrobat di pepohonan, keren ya!

Oh ya, owa juga memiliki bentuk tangan dan jari yang menyerupai kait atau hook. Hal ini berguna saat mereka memegang batang pohon dengan cepat saat berayun. Tangan mereka sangat kuat, mereka bahkan bisa melompat hingga 10 meter di udara, wow!
