Pernah dengar suara panggilan owa? Suara owa merupakan bentuk komunikasi yang dilakukan oleh owa untuk memberikan informasi kepada anggota kelompok lainnya.
Suara ini kerap diartikan berbeda oleh manusia loh. Suara owa ternyata digunakan sebagai indikator pergantian musim dalam kepercayaan masyarakat daerah.
Owa umumnya tinggal di hutan yang lebat, dimana pertemuan antar owa sangat terbatas.
Panggilan atau vokalisasi dilakukan owa untuk memberitahukan keberadaan kelompok, panggilan untuk makan, memberikan peringatan pada kelompok, juga untuk menarik pasangan agar datang mendekat.
Vokalisasi owa dalam bentuk nyanyian dan seruan yang sangat keras ini biasanya terdengar di pagi atau sore hari.
Masyarakat yang tinggal di pinggir hutan umumnya mendengar seruan mereka yang terdengar hingga jarak 2 km. Menariknya, beberapa kalangan masyarakat daerah memiliki pengertian sendiri soal suara owa ini.
Penelitian yang dilakukan Permana dkk., bagi masyarakat Sunda di Ujungjaya, Kab. Sumedang, Provinsi Jawa Barat, nyanyian owa ini sangatlah dihargai keberadaannya.
Masyarakat menilai, suara vokalisasi dari owa memberikan kenyamanan dan kedamaian yang memperkaya kegiatan mereka sehari-hari.
Suara owa sebagai indikator perubahan musim
Masyarakat seolah percaya apabila owa dapat mengetahui tanda pergantian musim di daerah mereka. Tanda itu akan diberitahukan melalui vokalisasi.
Cerita yang beredar di masyarakat, konon jika owa terus menerus berseru (dalam Bahasa sunda disebut nyawara) saat pagi maupun sore hari, maka dapat diprediksi akan terjadi musim kemarau yang panjang.
Seruan-seruan owa ini dipercaya oleh masyarakat melambangkan permintaan agar hujan segera turun lagi.
Sebaliknya, bila ada seekor owa keperakan (dalam bahasa daerah disebut kuweung nunggal) terus-menerus bernyanyi dan berseru di pagi hari, maka suara ini menandakan akan segera turun hujan.
Suara dari owa keperakan ini juga dipercaya sebagai peralihan musim dari musim kemarau dan musim hujan.
Vokalisasi owa tak hanya dipercaya sebagai indikator pergantian musim. Bagi sebagian orang, vokalisasi owa juga diartikan sebagai indikator kematian.
Orang-orang percaya bahwa panggilan owa-owa yang terus menerus dari siang hari hingga malam adalah pertanda akan datang berita kematian di sekitar tempat tinggal mereka.
