Hari Primata Internasional dan Lagu Monkey In A Cage

Setiap 1 September, dunia memeringati Hari Primata Internasional. Hari Primata Internasional ini diinisiasi oleh Animal Defenders International.

Inisiasi hari peringatan ini didasari karena meningkatnya impor monyet ekor panjang ke Inggris dan Amerika Serikat.

Puluhan ribu ekor monyet di dua negara pengimpor ini digunakan sebagai hewan percobaan di laboratorium.

Sebagai informasi, Mauritius dan Vietnam adalah negara pengekspor monyet untuk bahan percobaan ke kedua negara tersebut.

Jumlah impor yang fantastis ini akhirnya menarik perhatian pemerhati primata.

Mereka meminta pemerintah untuk menghentikan impor ini karena monyet akan mengalami keadaan yang menyakitkan.

Efek samping dapat mencakup prolaps rektum, muntah, tersumbatnya paru-paru, kolaps, mutilasi diri, serta kematian.

Dari kejadian ini penyanyi asal Inggris Raya, Maria Daines dan Paul Killington menulis lagu untuk Hari Primata Internasional.

Aku tau ini bagaikan sebuah permainan. Permainan hari kemarin, sekarang, dan esok yang sepertinya tetap akan sama. Disadari atau tidak, dunia ini penuh dengan kepedihan tetapi aku tidak dapat meninggalkannya. Oh, kudengar suara monyet kecil yang tak bisa berkata kecuali pasrah. Seperti itukah rasanya menjadi monyet percobaan?

Hari demi hari, tahun berganti tahun rasanya tak ada yang berubah. Mereka menggunakan banyak monyet kecil yang tak berdaya dan terpisah jarak yang jauh dari kelompoknya. Hari berganti hari, tahun demi tahun. Tampaknya Si Monyet Kecil masih berada dalam ruangan yang seperti kurungan.

Minggir kalian semua! Lihatlah di sana ada monyet kecil sedang sekarat! Menyingkir sekarang juga! Ada monyet-monyet kecil lainnya dalam penderitaan di ruangan itu! Sungguh, ini seperti buang-buang hidup saja!

Sekilas, lagu ini menceritakan tentang menjadi monyet yang diambil dari alam yang diperbanyak untuk dijadikan hewan percobaan.

Maria Daines dan Paul Killington menggugah kenyataan pahit yang dialami oleh monyet percobaan lab.

Mereka juga menyoroti peraturan yang meregulasi hewan percobaan di lab yang belum berubah pada waktu itu.

Sebenarnya, peraturan itu sudah tercantum di Written Declaration Nomor 40 Tahun 2007 yang disusun oleh Parlemen Uni Eropa. Sayangnya, peraturan itu belum dipublikasikan.

Saat ini, regulasi penggunaan primata untuk percobaan di Uni Eropa dalam tahap penghapusan dan akan dilarang sepenuhnya pada November 2022.
