24 Oktober, seluruh dunia memperingati Hari Owa Internasional, momen penting untuk menggaungkan peran salah satu primata unik yang hidup di hutan tropis Asia Tenggara, termasuk Indonesia. Yaitu “owa”, primata dari keluarga Hylobatidae, dikenal sebagai “penjaga hutan” karena kontribusinya dalam menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem. Mereka membantu proses penyebaran biji-bijian dan menjaga kelestarian hutan melalui aktivitas mereka yang dinamis.

Dalam sesi Komunitas Pro 04 RRI (Radio Republik Indonesia) Jakarta 92.8, Kamis (24/10), Hulwia Malik dari Gibbonesia menyoroti betapa pentingnya peran owa dalam ekosistem. “Owa adalah primata yang dikenal dengan kemampuan mereka berpindah dari pohon ke pohon dengan lincah (brakiasi), mereka memiliki suara nyaring yang bisa terdengar hingga satu kilometer jauhnya, digunakan untuk berkomunikasi dan menandai wilayah teritorial mereka. Sayangnya, populasi owa terus menurun akibat berbagai ancaman seperti perburuan, perdagangan ilegal, dan pemeliharaan,” ujarnya

Owa Jenggot Putih sebagai Ikon Hari Owa Sedunia 2024

Owa jenggot putih (Hylobates albibarbis) dipilih sebagai ikon Hari Owa Sedunia tahun 2024 karena spesies ini memiliki ciri khas yang unik dan sangat mencolok, yaitu jenggot putih di wajahnya dan mantel cokelat yang kontras dengan lengan panjangnya. Ciri-ciri fisik ini membuat owa jenggot putih mudah dikenali dan dapat menarik perhatian masyarakat terhadap pentingnya pelestarian spesies ini.

Hidup di hutan tropis Kalimantan, owa jenggot putih menghadapi tekanan besar akibat alih fungsi lahan, perburuan, perdagangan ilegal, dan pemeliharaan sebagai hewan peliharaan. Populasi owa jenggot putih kini semakin terancam, sehingga penetapan spesies ini sebagai ikon bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesadaran global akan ancaman-ancaman yang mereka hadapi.

Owa di Indonesia: Spesies yang Terancam 

Habitat alami owa tersebar di hutan-hutan Sumatra, Kalimantan, dan Jawa. Salah satu spesies yang paling dikenal adalah owa jawa (Hylobates moloch), satwa endemik Pulau Jawa yang kini berstatus terancam, berdasarkan dari International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Hulwia Malik berharap, melalui peringatan Hari Owa Internasional ini, kesadaran masyarakat dunia terhadap pentingnya melestarikan spesies owa bisa meningkat. “Dengan meningkatnya kesadaran, kita berharap masyarakat ikut terlibat dalam upaya pelestarian,” ujarnya.

Peran Masyarakat Lokal dalam Pelestarian Owa

Pendekatan partisipatif, terutama pelibatan masyarakat lokal yang tinggal di sekitar hutan, menjadi salah satu langkah penting dalam upaya konservasi. Dengan mendukung mereka untuk berpartisipasi menjaga habitat hutan dan owa.

“Peringatan ini mengingatkan bahwa owa bukan sekadar “penjaga hutan,” tetapi juga simbol penting bagi pelestarian lingkungan hidup. Kelangsungan hidup owa bergantung pada upaya bersama dalam menjaga ekosistem hutan. Hutan yang lestari bukan hanya tempat hidup bagi owa, tetapi juga bagi ribuan spesies lain dan pada akhirnya, sumber kehidupan bagi manusia,” tutup Hulwia

Dengan menjadikan owa jenggot putih sebagai ikon, diharapkan masyarakat semakin sadar akan pentingnya upaya konservasi, perlindungan habitat alaminya, serta melibatkan diri dalam tindakan nyata untuk menjaga kelestarian hutan Kalimantan dan keberlanjutan populasi spesies yang terancam.
