Hari Owa Internasional, Momentum untuk Lindungi Owa di Indonesia

Hari owa internasional yang dirayakan setiap tanggal 24 Oktober menjadi momentum masyarakat untuk melindungi primata owa yang kian terancam keberadaannya. Dikenal dari suara dan bentuk lengannya yang panjang, satwa owa tersebar cukup luas di wilayah Indonesia. Di hari owa ini, yuk kita simak fakta-fakta menarik terkait owa yang perlu kamu ketahui!

Dimana owa tinggal?

Sekitar 9 dari 20 jenis owa dunia tinggal di hutan-hutan Indonesia. Kesembilannya tersebar di kantong-kantong habitat yang tersebar di Pulau Sumatra – Mentawai, Jawa, dan Kalimantan.

  • Owa serudung (Hylobates lar), owa ungko (Hylobates agilis), owa bilau (Hylobates klossi), dan owa siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus) tersebar di Sumatera – Mentawai.
  • Owa kelempiau barat (Hylobates abbotti), owa jenggot putih (Hylobates albibarbis), owa kalawat (Hylobates muelleri), dan owa kelempiau utara (Hylobates funereus) terdapat di Pulau Kalimantan
  • Owa jawa (Hylobates moloch) yang hanya dijumpai di Pulau Jawa.

Seberapa penting keberadaan owa di hutan?

Owa memainkan peran penting dalam penyebaran benih, yang berkontribusi untuk menjaga kesehatan hutan yang sekaligus menjadi rumah mereka. Kesehatan hutan juga bermanfaat bagi masyarakat yang menggunakan sumber daya hutan, seperti petani atau masyarakat di pinggiran hutan. Terjaganya hutan mendukung terbentuknya ekosistem yang stabil.

Makanya, di hari owa internasional ini mari kita lindungi keberadaan owa untuk dukung kesehatan hutan!

Kenapa owa dilindungi keberadaannya?

Secara global, owa adalah salah satu keluarga primata yang paling terancam. Perlindungan primata ini dilakukan karena populasi yang semakin menurun di kantung-kantung habitatnya. Populasi Owa terus menyusut karena perburuan, salah satu ancaman utama bagi satwa langka ini. Perburuan owa umumnya terjadi karena adanya permintaan satwa peliharaan dari masyarakat yang ingin memelihara owa di rumahnya.

Selain perburuan, rusaknya habitat owa juga menjadi ancaman terbesar bagi kehidupan owa di hutan. Semakin banyaknya alih fungsi lahan hutan menghilangkan pepohonan yang menjadi rumah owa. Sayangnya, Indonesia masih menghadapi banyak permasalahan terkait hilangnya lahan hutan di berbagai daerah.

Bagaimana bentuk konservasi owa di Indonesia?

Demi melindungi dan melestarikan keberadaan owa di Indonesia, pemerintah mengeluarkan peraturan terkait perlindungan satwa berlengan panjang ini. Upaya konservasi seperti adanya perlindungan habitat dan lembaga konservasi juga turut dilakukan untuk mendukung pelestarian owa.

Di Indonesia sendiri, sebanyak 7 jenis owa telah dilindungi sesuai dengan PermenLHK No. P106 Tahun 2018 tentang Jenis Tumbuhan dan Satwa yang Dilindungi. Hanya saja, jenis owa kelempiau utara dan owa kelempiau barat hingga saat ini masih belum masuk dalam daftar jenis satwa dilindungi nasional.

Selain itu, pemerintah juga melakukan strategi dan rencana aksi konservasi owa. Dari kesembilan jenis owa dan siamang tersebut, hanya owa jawa yang telah memiliki strategi dan rencana aksi konservasi nasional melalui Peraturan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan Nomor P.57/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/7/2016.

Sayangnya, hingga kini strategi yang dikeluarkan pemerintah belum mencakup seluruh jenis owa. Padahal, seluruh owa di Indonesia tergolong satwa yang terancam punah loh! Semoga dengan adanya hari owa internasional ini mengingkatkan pemerintah ke depannya agar membuat strateginya yang bisa mencakup semua owa ya! Semoga!
